Women Wear a lot of Hats

Women have worn and continue to wear a lot of hats. I was pondering this thought one evening as I reviewed my day. The day was an ordinary one jam packed with tasks no different from what your daily dance card holds regularly.

I’d received disturbing news about a dear friend the night before, so I slept fitfully (in between bouts of insistent barking by our labradoodle who was experiencing intestinal distress). By 10am Ann Goodpasture and I were on our hands and knees organizing art supplies for two hours at the Center for Arts and Wellness where we conduct classes. “What is wrong with this picture”, I queried rhetorically at one point. “What are two 70+ year old women doing schlepping art supplies and trying mightily to get up off the floor from labeling and organizing cabinets?”

While the first third of my day was spent performing manual labor, the second third focused on household responsibilities. Being an incessant multi-tasker, I made a pitstop at Publix on the way home to pick up a few necessities. Ha!  $170 later, I headed for home armed with ingredients to make homemade split pea soup anticipating a coolish evening.

The last third of the day was spent writing a polling report and doing my physical therapy exercises. Finally, at 9:00 I climbed into bed accompanied by my iPad on which I play Wordle, Quordle, Connections, cross word puzzle, and solitaire followed by a light reading regiment until the iPad hits me in the face. It’s my downtime when I can totally relax and not tend to anyone else (unless the dog has gastro issues).

There was nothing extraordinary about my day, it simply mimicked the days of many women I know who multi-task a multitude of responsibilities, without stopping to reflect on how much they accomplish in a twenty-four-hour period.  So, to all of you household CEOs, pause once in a while to acknowledge your value.
